You're correct -- it is judgmental, and I'm surprised they used it.
Language is a powerful thing, eh? I had some gay acquaintances/colleagues
at another university who detested being called "homosexual" (as opposed to
being called "gay").

Couldn't this be good news for "some?" If you want to be one way, go that
way, and if you want to be another way, well there's that option too?
