Mike Smith said (among a number of other things),
Quite simply, it's impossible that a physical disability can be the
cause of any form of crime for example (murder, rape, robbery, etc.),
but a mental disability very easily could be.
The public quite rightly considers the two fundamentally different.
With which I totally disagree. My guess would be that Mike isn't a clinical
psychologist who has spent time both teaching and working with private clients.
Also, it is difficult to support the idea that because a person is placed in
the category of "mentally ill" that there is a greater likelihood that they
will commit more crimes than a personally is not so diagnosed, unless one is
among the part of the population who believes that only a person who is
mentally ill would commit such crimes.
Finally, you better get used to it because, as I said, the mentally ill are a
protected category according to federal law, and many are being advised to sue
if they are not given the accommodations to which the law says they are
entitled (yes, that "entitled" word). Example, at my previous institution, I
had a student who was diagnosed Bipolar Disorder who had a letter from her
psychiatrist that she had been prescribe a "service dog" to help her deal with
some underlying panic issues. Our ignorant Vice Chancellor for Student
Affairs, on the advice of our similarly ignorant and totally unqualified
Disabilities Officer, told her she was not to bring the dog to campus, because
some of the students in her classes might be allergic to dogs. (By the way,
her dog was a small rat terrier who spent most of her time in classes sleeping
in a carry bag that the student had for her.
Just sayin', better get used to it and stop being surprised.
