I believe that your guess is correct unless Prof Smith went for
a clinical retread.  It should be noted that Prof Smith is teaching
at a Canadian college and the U.S. ADA laws don't apply to him
though there may be relevant Canadian law on this point (I'll leave
it to a Canadian Tipster to educate us about the relevant issues).
I also believe that he teaches at a private college which means
that they can make all sorts of arbitrary decisions and rules (again,
Canadian Tipster might be able to clarify the situation..

That being said, I think that Prof Smith is just attempting to become 
the Canadian Michael Sylvester.
