I agree with Steven regarding the Argosy Psy.D. program in DC; I gave a talk
there earlier this year and was by and large impressed with the rigor of their
program (they've managed to make some excellent hires, including several fairly
well known researchers who are interested in bridging the gap between science
and practice). While there, I gave a pretty hard-hitting talk on pseudoscience
in mental health practice, and surprisingly most of the faculty and students
were receptive to my views. Alas, my distinct impression is that they are an
outlier among Argosy Psy.D. programs.

I served as a Site Visitor for the APA for two Psy.D., both of which were
excellent programs (albeit expensive for the students). I have a student at
Argosy in Washington currently and she is enjoying it. The program is VERY
rigorous and I think prepares excellent clinicians whose practice is
evidence-based/research driven.

I know that many folks poo poo psy d programs and I understand why that is so.
But I also understand from other folks that some of these programs are quite
good. (Scott are you there? can you answer this one?)

I have a student who would like to go the psy d route--respects research, has
worked with me in the past, but just doesn't want to do a dissertation; prefers
the additional clinical training and knows he wants to be a clinician and not a
researcher later on, although wants to be intelligent about the research
evidence. He would like some guidance on "better" programs. I am not a
clinician and don't keep up as well as maybe a clinician might.

Collective wisdom please on this issue--which are some of the better psy d
programs.
