Short answer: the fact that two species have a common ancestor does not mean that one is the ancestor of the other, or even that one is more highly evolved that the other. O.Donnell is proof of that ;-). And of course both the various monkeys and Homo Sap have evolved from the common ancestor, and are in fact still evolving (see the recent evolution of adult milk digestion as one example).
