Students have 2 written assignments for internships.

1) a journal of their activities and reflections regarding such
2) a paper that reviews some relevant literature and compares the experience
with the literature. The purpose of this paper is to discuss which experiences
were "as described" in the literature and which were not.

I meet with students individually once per week regarding their practica,
mainly just to touch base but also to help me to help them to find the library
resources appropriate to number 2) above. Sometimes, but not always, their
onsite supervisors are helpful with identifying the appropriate literature.
This model has worked well for me.

Hi

What are people's thoughts about what is needed to make undergraduate
experiential learning experiences (e.g., practica, work placements,
volunteering activities in community, ...) work well? By "work well" I mean
students truly gain opportunities to integrate academic knowledge with issues
that arise in practical settings, and the academic side gets due weight in
evaluation of students. Perhaps another way of saying this is, how does one
ensure the academic integrity of the activity?

Take care
Jim
