The chair of our IRB advised: "if the data analysis involves using
private, identifiable information the study should be under IRB approval rather
then letting the study expire,if the study was approved via Expedited or Full
Committee review. The statement would not have been made for a study
categorized as Exempt."

Cheers,

Karl W.

Subject: [tips] IRB Question

I recently received an email from our university IRB chair indicating that a
project was approaching its date of termination. The email requested that I
indicate whether my intent was to terminate, continue, or change the project.
The email went on to say in the absence of a renewal form "your study is
terminated, and you will no longer be approved to continue work on this
project, including data analysis and preparation of presentations."

I am especially interested in comments or insights regarding the last portion
of the quote. Thanks so much, Blaine
