Hi

I have no doubt that our conservatives (i.e., republican light) would LOVE to
emulate the more extreme policies of republicans in the USA. But the public
(right now at least) would never put up with it. Indeed, conservatives would
not even form the government (in all likelihood) except that there are various
other parties that divide the vote (liberals, new democrats, greens, and then
the anomaly of the Bloc Quebec, a separatist group). There are plans for a
Fox-like news station in Canada and various conservative politicians are hardly
paragons of scientific knowledge (e.g., believing that humans and dinosaurs
existed at the same time). So we'll see what the future brings.

I do believe generally that people get the kind of governments they want (or
think they want) in most western democracies, so the interesting thing for me
is the attitudes and behavior of the public even more so than of the
politicians. What is the psychological basis, for example, of the apparent
antipathy many Americans appear to hold for government? Seems to run deeper
than the recent (?) ineffectiveness of Washington. A complicated question, I'm
sure.

Take care
Jim

I envy/admire the Canadian culture and ethos on so many levels. In
depressing comparison, I find the effectiveness of our politician's
chicanery embarrassing and demeaning and our citizens' ignorance on
matters of science and economic realities pathetic. As Annette would
say, "Sigh."
