Well, it is true that I thought Joan's question ambiguous in relation 
to its intent. Was she challenging me on the basis that I had no data 
to support my interpretation? Or was it simply a request for data if 
I had any?

I couldn't tell. From her clarification,  it seems it was the latter. 
It didn't matter to me in replying, though,  because my answer would 
be the same in either case (no data to choose between the two claims, 
but I didn't need any merely to raise a plausible alternative). But 
perhaps I could have worked on the tone of my reply, which may have 
come across  stronger than I intended. Actually, it came across more 
incoherent than I intended. 

As for Allen Esterson dashing off his reply while dashing off to 
Hampton Court, heads are going to roll over this (Wait, they already 
have).
