Hi

I just looked briefly at this issue because the administration here has
a policy of not painting cinder block walls, which impacts a number of
our offices and labs. As Michael P noted, there are diverse areas of
research into color. I focussed on the design area, with most of the
relevant papers appearing in environmental psychology journals. The
literature is pretty sparse. Relevant to what I was looking for, there
was evidence that gray is the least attractive of a range of "colors",
there is evidence for some relationship between color and such
psychological factors as productivity and mood (although studies are
mostly lab rather than real-life studies, and red has received most
attention), and choice appears to play a role in various aspects of work
environment, perhaps including color. Here's pieces I cited in memo to
Human Resources and Health and Safety (I'm not holding my breath).

Elliot, A. J., & Maier, M. A. (2007). Color and psychological
functioning. Current Directions in
Psychological Science, 16, 250-254.
Friedman, R. S., & Förster, J. (2010). Implicit affective cues and
attentional tuning: An integrative
review. Psychological Bulletin, 136(5), 875-893.
Kaya, N., & Epps, H. H. (2004). Relationship between color and emotion:
A study of university
students. College Student Journal, 38, 396-405.

Take care

There's a lot of info floating around the web about the "psychology of
color". Does anyone know of any solid research on this topic?
