FWIW, it's been a few years since I have taught research methods, but one of the ways in which I try to convey the importance of proper authorship and the need for transparency in the sciences is by requiring students to include, when appropriate, an author note that indicates the type of assistance received in writing the paper (e.g., from the Writing Center, tutor) or in carrying out the statistical analyses (by hand or by SPSS). Although I only give individual assignments each with unique data and specify that the writing and statistical hand calculations must the the author's own, I encourage students to seek each other's assistance (never another instructor's!) when necessary. However, they must specify the nature of such assistance, just like the pros do with their paper.
