Hi

On a superficial reading, the work identified by Beth would appear to be an
application of psychology to the inoculation of people against changes in
attitudes and values ... I wonder what the ethics of that would be for
professional psychologists?

It has been a few years since I looked a bit at faith-based psychology, but
material was readily found including texts, programs, journals, and all the
trappings of psychology specialties. This seemed to be especially the case for
counseling/clinical topics. And I remember being struck by one book on
psychology and religion (a completely legitimate topic, of course) that
promoted itself as containing chapters all written by people of faith (not so
legitimate in my view). I see now that there is as well a society for Christian
Psychology at

Another memorable aspect of faith-based psychology was the publication of a
Sage volume on transpersonal research methods, basically legitimizing religious
experience as a valid source of knowledge. See

I would characterize such misguided ideas as a natural off-shoot of the equally
misguided notion of indigenous psychologies, that is, psychological research
and practices that are culture-specific and based on ways of knowing indigenous
to the culture (i.e., non-scientific).

Others would disagree with this view of course.

Take care
Jim

Any input from others who can gather their thoughts more coherently than I
seem to be able to do?
