My first response, after reading the first
"meaningful" quote (this unpreparedness is a reason
for the high rate of Christian students dropping
their faith after entering college.) In the nearly
43 years that I have been teaching now, I can name
hundreds of students who were very involved in
religion through high school and the first year of
college that "dropped" their faith after entering
college. One of the reasons that may explain some
of these desertions/conversions is that they had
their minds opened up - they learned critical
thinking which led them to make different decisions
than they had while under parental control. I'm not
surprised that students who go to conservative high
schools may have been captivated by a text that is
written in the same manner as what they hear at home
and church and youth group. Not having even looked
at the book I can't say much about it, but a book
that is written by a psychologist who is noted for
his/her contributions to psychology would never be
written from a Christian perspective rather than an
objective, critical thinking perspective. I guess
many of the students who respond so positively to
his book are those who will probably choose to
attend a conservative Christian college.
I could go on and on about this topic, but then I
might say how I really think and feel about it.
