The tone of futility for the vote of no confidence I think is misplaced. It is
the same thing as someone saying, "Why should I vote, my state is a Red/Blue
state and my vote really doesn't count." Yes, but margins matter and messages
sent matter. Sexton may have the support of important constituencies at the
University, but he also knows that his support in other areas is lacking.
Therefore, he has to be conscious of what that might mean as he develops
policies.

  * Are the A&S faculty upset about things that might upset the other areas
over time, that they are just being less affected or slower to react right now?
  * Are the other areas misinformed about details that the A&S faculty have
figured out and this vote has begun a conversation that will shift attitudes
over time? (or vice versa, that the A&S faculty are misinformed)
  * Will this action motivate greater scrutiny and/or investigation by any
and all stakeholders at NYU.

Finally, it is good to model to students that it is proper to speak truth to
power, if for no other reason than to make sure that truth is spoken.

I look forward to your disagreement.

Just in case anyone is interested, here's a few points:

(1) The Board of Trustees have re-affirmed their support
of John Sexton as President of NYU.

(2) Sexton has sent out an email saying that there much hard
work to do in the future for NYU and he's in for the long
haul.

So, what was the effect of the vote of no confidence by the
Arts & Science faculty? I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

P.S. Even though author E. L. Doctorow ("Ragtime", etc.) was
among the faculty urging the vote of no confidence, apparently
the deans of all of the other NYU schools, especially the school
of medicine, voiced their support for Sexton. And beat goes on.
