No thanks to Yahoo!Groups, I did not see this original message
in my mail box, and had to come to the Groups page to reply.
I see that Travis has posted an excellent reply, but I would like to
add that it's not mandatory to have the phone line plugged into
the TiVo box at all times.
If you unplug the phone line, TiVo will still try to connect
(approximately once a day, on both of my boxes) and will not be
successful. Like Travis said, you may go two weeks before you
notice things aren't working right.
However, just like seat belts on an airplane, it's probably a good
idea to leave it plugged in all the time, so that you don't forget,
and so that you always (no guarantee, of course) get current
information.
What TiVo does is update _your_ box with the latest version of
the Guide. You then have access to a master list of all the
programs you _could_ receive (with your channels available),
including times, episode titles, a brief description of what the
program or movie is about, and more.
If you don't have a current version of the Guide, TiVo will stop
recording programs that you want to see, when it runs out of
Guide information, in about two weeks.
I'm sure there is an algorithm by which TiVo determines when to
connect, but I don't know what it is. Sometimes it connects in the
middle of the night, sometimes it connects in the middle of the
day. If it determines that the phone is busy, it tries again later
(usually several hours later).
It has never interfered with my telephone usage, except for when
I first signed up, and it needed to use the phone line for a long
time. I don't think the daily phone call takes more than a couple
of minutes at most.
