enough of a performance increase over old linksys/netgear 11b adapters to
justify the additional investment?

Yep. And I strongly advise using the TiVo branded 11g adapter. It is
sure to work, and it outperforms all the others because it was
designed specifically for the TiVo and the drivers are optimized.
