Real Player and Quicktime probably won't help at all decoding MPEG-2.
You have the latest TiVo Desktop installed, 2.5.1?

It does sound like whichever codec Windows is selecting to decode the
.tivo files is incorrect. .tivo files are MPEG-2 encoded, wrapped in
an encrypted envelope. A DLL with TiVo Desktop handles the
decryption, but it relies on a codec to decode the video. (Unless you
buy the TiVo Desktop Plus upgrade - then you get a codec for playback
too.) Unfortunately, on Windows this is a big of a mess and it is
difficult to force it to use a different codec.

The best place I can think of to get help is the TiVo To Go forum on
TiVoCommunity.com.

The 11b connection is much slower than 11g, and 11b generally had less
range to boot. So it may just be a weak connection causing the
issues, especially if it worked well with the 11g router.
