Right.

Correct, TiVo changed the unsubbed behavior when the 2.0 software
shipped. That caught the last few Sony SVR-2000 Series1 units (so
rare that the generalization is made that all S1 boxes work without a
sub - the truth is all except these last few Sonys do) and all S2 and
later units.

It is really a change in the firmware that was coincident with the
manufacturing change to ship the new software. But the easiest way to
demark it for consumers was any box that shipped with 1.3 or earlier
works as a basic recorder without a sub, while any box that shipped
with 2.0 or later does not. With the caveat of Toshiba and Pioneer
units which include TiVo Basic.

Nope, the S3 and TiVo HD are bricks without a sub. Just like the S2
you can do some basic trickplay on Live TV, and watch existing
recordings (from when they had subs), but that's about it.
