Hi Nan,

1.) You can't record a program without it's commercials. However
there is a feature associated with the skip to tik feature on your
remote control which will allow you to skip ahead 30 secs for each
push. Usually you have to press it 4 times to skip ahead 2 minutes
which is the usual length of a commercial. You can also skip ahead
using the fast forward bottom depending on what you like. You need to
enable the skip ahead function by first starting to play a recorded
episode, then pressing Select, Play, Select 30 Select.

2.) One of the features of the TiVo is that it will record suggestions
based on your viewing habits as it learns them. You can turn it off in
the Messages and Settings area but it doesn't do any harm. The easy
way to teach the Tivo which things you like and don't is to use your
Thumbs UP or Down buttons to rate different shows.

Hope this helps.
