I've seen this several times myself. It's usually accompanied by
something like ``spam is a problem we all have to deal with, so just
get over it''. i.e, the "misery loves company" attitude. Luckily,
this kind of immaturity is rare because of the fact that the sender
also fulfills a need of their own by sending you a message---it's not
purely to your benefit that you receive their message, though many
like to pretend this is the case. If they refuse to confirm simply
out of spite, that need goes unfulfilled.

Internet "old-timers" seem to have the biggest problem with TMDA,
because they just can't accept that the neighborhood has changed.
Being somewhat of a 'net old-timer myself, I can sympathize, but also,
don't attack me for trying to make the best of a bad situation. Blame
the implementors of SMTP for their lack of foresight.

While I don't enjoy all the negativity, it might actually have a
beneficial effect if it convinces the community that if such drastic
measures are necessary, then something really needs to be done to fix
the problem (not the symptoms, but the disease itself). Too many
people are in denial currently, and still looking for that silver
bullet to stop spam.
