Forgive me if I'm forgetting the nature of your problem, but how about just upgrading Sendmail instead of dumping it? How about Python? TMDA does tons of rfc822 parsing with the email package (http://www.python.org/doc/current/lib/module-email.html). Perl would also be a good choice if you're more comfortable with that.
