I am not in a position to make that decision, the site I
am at has uniform configuration... we're talking about 1000+ machines

I would loose a number of mailing list features or have to re-invent them.

I provide hosting to other people and can't do that.

I've been looking at the python email package and will play with that.

For now I have sendmail adding a custom x-header for me we yes
it can be spoofed, but if that happens I can just change it
if it's a problem.
