The mistake is to think that protocol terms mean what they say, rather
than define something by their resulting actions.

In DNS the term CNAME is short for canonical name, but later RFC's make
it clear that a system may have 'more than one canonical name'. I'll
leave it to the reader to visit 'dictionary.com' and decide if you
should have more than one canonical name.

Contrast also the famous astronaut rhetorical(?) question 'I have to
click on the 'Start' button to shut it down?'.
