I found the qmail-remote-auth patch, and discovered that it was installed by default into my gentoo qmail distro. I added the outgoing smtproute to the control file and Bam! works exactly as advertised. Thanks a lot for the useful advice! This simplifies the mail setup for my home network immensely.
