Why not use further directories within the Maildir like the standard (?) cur, new & tmp? New messages (non confirmed) go into 'new'. Confirmed/Actioned messages can be moved into 'cur'. This extends the notion that unread messages are in the "new" directory, and read ones in "cur". You may be able to use standard MUA flags with "cur" for any other status you need.
