I have reproduced this bug; I assume now that it's a BSD v.s. Linux
thing. I actually ended up reproducing the issue inside a NetBSD 3.1
i386 VMware virtual machine image I downloaded. BSD takes some getting
used to!

Now I just have to debug it...
