It is not so easy to do but you can press Up to go back in the history and find it

Because that's the ultimate use case I had in mind: I commonly search for text, yank it into a tmux buffer, paste it somewhere in the shell, go about my usual business, and later enter copy mode to search again. At this point, I must retype my most recent search query from memory, so populating the prompt with last pane_search_string would be ideal.
