I could re-write that (or heck, anyone could, it's a wiki) say something
like:
 
"Just like when JSPs were added to the mix, when servlet engines were
first written, the developers of those engines thought it a good idea to
provide a generic mapping that would enable *any* servlet to be run.
Just drop your class here, and it will work without having to configure
it!"
 
Once again, that's sheer fabrication, but seems "likely".
 
And go ahead and link it, I'd be quite complimented!  Just as an FYI,
the domain will soon change from test.javaranch.com to faq.javaranch.com
