Yes, the Coyote/JK2 Connector is commented out, but the Coyote HTTP/1.1 is not (I guess that's obvious...).

httpd.conf:

Include /Library/Tomcat/Home/conf/auto/mod_jk.conf

where /Home is a symbolic link to
/Library/Tomcat/jakarta-tomcat-4.1.12. The only other thing I changed
in httpd.conf was the Server Name, which I set as localhost.

I'm trying to access http://localhost/examples and getting a
404 error.
http://localhost:8080/examples works great.
