There is at least one of the developers who tests against kaffe and gcj. Unfortunately for you, he doesn't spend a lot of his time on the 4.x version. According to his reports, at least at one point, Tomcat 4 ran fine with kaffe and gcj (and commented that gcj didn't really beat HotSpot :).
