You probably have a bad clone NE2000 network card? I have seen problems
with those. You can enter the parameters for it at boot, that is, if it
was on port 0x300 irq 10, it would be something like:

        boot: zImage eth0 iport=0x300 irq=10

(I probably have the syntax wrong, look in the BootPrompt howto...)

to make it not autoprobe.

There is probably a better way to fix it, but, I don't have a broken
ethernet card to use to make it fail... I have an open request for someone
to send me one of them so I can fix it... does anyone have one of these
broken NE2000 clones that they could ship me for a while, so I can figure
out which driver conflicts with it?

Anyway, if that doesn't fix it, or if you don't even have a network card,
then tell me more about the problem and what cards are in the machine.
