It never did work for me either. No idea why not, even though I tried
and I tried. When the situation got desperate I had to resort to
other means. :(
[Unfortunately, since I changed jobs recently I no longer have access
to that particular box.]

Getting off topic a little, but just to set the record straight
here...
Ramdisk support is on by default. (It has to be anyway for initrd
disks to work).
Minix support is there as a module.
But for work with tomsrtbt, it seems to make sense to use a
custom-built kernel. Redhat also ships with a basic kernel-BOOT,
which the rpm header describes as:
This package includes a trimmed down version of the Linux kernel.
This kernel is used on the installation boot disks only and should not
be used for an installed system, as many features in this kernel are
turned off because of the size constraints.
IIRC, it has ramdisk support and can be used with an initrd to add the
boot-time drivers you may need. But then it starts to get messy.
Cheers
