of course I re built and installed it :). I tried both adding a
new append, and adding my string to the current one.
I still get the error after adding the param to the boot line
(zImage floppy=broken_dcl). so I think the kernel on tomsrtbt
doesn't have the same capabilities as the one on the laptop now
(2.2.13) I'm assuming the 2.2 kernels are much bigger than the
2.0 ones (hence why your not using it).
any ideas on how to get the kernel to recognise the floppy?
Anyone have any luck with an ast ascentia 950N laptop?

Yes. Of course, you do have to *re-run* buildit.s and install.s.
You should be modifying the __existing__ append= statement, NOT
adding a new one, by the way.

Delete emacs and ce, or vi and elvis, depending on your
preference of
editors. Delete dmsdos.o and dutil if you don't use DoubleSpace
etc.
Delete ntfs.o if you don't need ntfs. Look in
/usr/lib/modules/scsi
for modules you don't need. That will probably be enough.
