I think you might be confused.
With long file names, the 8.3 *always* exists, *in addtion* to the long
name. When you mount with -t vfat, you see the long name. When you mount
with -t msdos, it is not _converting_ anything, it is just showing you the
other name, which is always there and has been there all along, the long
names are still there. The same thing happens when you run msdos - you
only see the short names and the long names are hidden, and if you update
or save a file, they get broken and lost. Just stay within -t vfat and
w95 or later and you'll be fine. Let me know if that doesn't solve the
issue...
