If you see a bunch of short file names and a couple of long file names
when mounted in -t vfat, it means you have a bunch of files whose long
file names got toasted. It isn't that they are not being displayed or
mounted correctly- it is that they have been destroyed, either by
manipulating them with DOS programs or manipulating them while mounted
without -t vfat or because of your smbmount or samba options. -Tom
