Thanks Tom and Gernot.

I added the devices with mknod from the tomsrtbt command line (using the
commands from Gernot's post) and could then mount and at least read
the files in my Linux and Win 98 partitions on /dev/hde. I haven't
yet tried writing to the drive or creating a new tomsrtbt floppy.

I don't remember if I was running kernel 2.0.36 (my first Linux
installation)
when I added the Promise card. I seem to recall the Promise website said
something about native support for ATA 66 in at least that version (or
perhaps in Red Hat's release of that version), but their site has changed
and I can't find it now. In any case you need to add the boot parameters
for kernels before 2.4.x - perhaps the patch made that unnecessary.
I never used the patch. (I'm currently running RH 6.2 with kernel 2.2.18).

The major problem in using the Promise card with pre-2.4.x kernels is
figuring out what i/o ports to use for the boot parameters. There was
a post on one of the Usenet Linux newsgroups which told how to determine
these from within Win 98, which is how I did it.

Thanks again guys.

Charles Sullivan
