As Karyn stated at the begining of this thread, people are trying
to do someting now. I don't know much about b.o.o, other than I know
when i sponsor a putback I need to do a lot of the bugtracking stuff
(note: as a sponsor, in addition to the bugtracking, we also have to
do Request To Integrate, test, build, etc etc - so really, bugtracking
is not the hardest part of being a sponsor)
There are still growing
pains, but I've seen work going on internally to try to fix things -
please keep in mind that we don't have infinite resources (but we wish
we did :) It is in all of our best interests to fix the processes.
But it isn't just sponsorship. If I file a CR, I have to ask someone
within Sun to update it with additional information for me, I have to
ask someone within Sun for its current status. Hell, I even have to
ask someone with Sun to check if anyone is already working on a CR I
intend to work on. Sponsorship is the final throws of dealing with
the current system, the entirety of the lead-up to it is done purely
by people willing to help. Because even simple operations like that
(the current status, and RE assigned bits having been on the roadmap
for close to a year now) are still not possible without manual
assistance from a Sun employee.
This is what I meant by there being no evidence that anything is being
done to improve matters, it's taken close to a year to add two plain
text fields (and it still isn't done). Seeing this what realistic
person would have any faith that more far-reaching changes would even
happen?
And yes, I appreciate that resources are finite, and that it's in
everyones interests to fix the process. But can they really be so
finite that exposing two fields takes a year? Does that *really* seem
to demonstrate an interest in fixing the process?
There is no way that I can possibly find this as frustrating as all of
you, but we're certainly frustrated to. b.o.o. and Bugster are both
things that are owned and developed by other groups. Part of the problem
is that those groups aren't set up to do ongoing development. For the
b.o.o. work, I can give you a whole host of reasons about why the basic
changes haven't been released yet, but they won't make you any happier
than they've made me. Not that it is entirely that groups fault: we're
piggy-backing on work they did years ago for another group that had no
reason to change on an ongoing basis.
I do appreciate the email, though, because I forwarded it to the person
who owns the work. I think the message coming from you is more powerful
than it is coming from me.
I've been prodding, and believe that the upcoming availability of Java
as open source is going to help move this stuff forward.
More soon (I hope).
