The feature is new in ksh93 and was AFAIK introduced shortly after ksh93d. AFAIK bash cloned that feature later which means there is now a common way between the two major POSIX-like shells to implement localisation in scripts via $"..." string literals (which makes this a likely canidate for the next POSIX standard). > > Why would we want to be incompatible with ourselves by using something > > else? > Incompatible with what?
