Right.  Some options:

  - update without naming a branch updates to the head of a branch
    named in the repo's config file (which could be set up by cadmium).
    This might require modifications to mercurial.

  - update without naming a branch updates to the tipmost head that doesn't
    belong to a named branch.  No config necessary, but would need
    mercurial changes.

  - rely on cadmium to do the right thing, and assume that we're just
    always going to use it.  No changes to mercurial necessary.
