In particular, the restriction that an instance cannot also be used as a class has been lifted in OWL 2.  In particular, see http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/WD-owl2-new-features-20090421/#F12:_Punning

To put it simply, I was told to keep the ontology in OWL-DL so as to do reasoning better. I think it had to do something with in OWL Full that a Class and an instance could be the same making it difficult to isolate out the instances.
