Bruce, The Quickstart guide does mention that, after importing skos-core.rdf into a new model, adding a controlNumber property would create a customized version of the vocabulary, but the blog entry goes into more detail on how to go about extending an ontology. The Quickstart guide is more focused on application development. For a more detailed description of creating and extending ontologies, see the recently revised TopBraid Composer Getting Started Guide at http://www.topquadrant.com/docs/marcom/TBC-Getting-Started-Guide.pdf.
I haven't personally looked into the details of optimizing RDFa for Google's crawler to understand, but http://blog.schema.org/2011/11/using-rdfa-11-lite-with-schemaorg.html on the official schema.org blog looks like a good resource.
