Hi Robert, Joe, and all, John is right. Old "TOPCASED editors" are deprecated. Technically speaking those editors were quite good but not flexible enough for customization (compartments, connection routing, colours, property view...) and especially concerning UML profiles with no ability to display stereotypes attributes. We needed to switch to more flexible generation framework like GMF. The other reason was economical : we joined efforts with CEA (French nuclear agency) to develop one modelling UML /sysML editor that would be hosted by the eclipse foundation instead of two development of an open source Eclipse UML editor in parallel. When Eclipse MDT Papyrus reached a certain level of maturity, we decided to integrate it into TOPCASED so that we could make TOPCASED ecosystem of customization capabilities. Then it was extremely costly to maintain two editors technologies and from 5.2 we encourage TOPCASED users using Papyrus as it has now quite good maturity except a few remaining bugs on collaborative modelling that are mainly fixed now.
"old" topcased editors remain present because there exists some users of those editors that would probably like to benefit from progress in other components (gendoc2, OCL, simulation...) but that are not yet ready to switch to Papyrus editors. Concerning the interest to use TOPCASED or to download directly Papyrus, it is just a matter of scope. Papyrus will bring you the UML/SysML modelling editor and that's all. TOPCASED is a modelling platform with modelling editors but also document generator, model simulation, OCL editor, requirement management/traceability. Robert I am sure some of the staff will answer shortly but I have been a user for several years. The Topcased editor is deprecated. Use the Papyrus editor and documentation in that column. There are tools that work with the editors that are provided by the Topcased organization and I don't think they are available via the direct papyrus download. But I have not explored that very deeply. Robert... These are great questions.. As you find answers to these questions... You may want to update the list to help others that are new to Topcased... I am slowly looking at the same features ... and have a similar interest in the answers to your questions.. My aim is to use sysML for requirements and system modelling and I want to use TOPCASED for that. I haven't read all the documentation yet because I get stuck at the very beginning, where to start. What I know so far: The TOPCASED suite is build using Eclipse. Inside the TOPCASED suite there is a TOPCASED editor (which is old ??? but I'm not sure) and the is a Papyrus editor. >From here on I get confused. In the version I have downloaded (Topcased-5.3.0) >I can use both the TOPCASED editor and the Papyrus editor to create a project >and the models. But if I look at the Papyrus website I see that I can also >download and install the Papyrus editor on its own and use it. My questions are therefore: 1. what is the added value of the TOPCASED suite? 2. should I use the Papyrus editor (and read only the left column on the documentation page) or the TOPCASED editor (and read only the right column)? 3. Or should the two editors be used side by side and is the one better for task A and the other better for task B? I have read the 30 minute and 2 hour presentation but they focus on the TOPCASED editor and mention the Payrus editor as a side note. So I would like to get some help in focusing my efforts in learning and understanding TOPCASED. Thanks and best regards, Robert. _______________________________________________ Topcased-users mailing list [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> http://lists.gforge.enseeiht.fr/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/topcased-users -- Joe Simpson Sent From My DROID!! ________________________________ Ce message et les pièces jointes sont confidentiels et réservés à l'usage exclusif de ses destinataires.
