Hi all.

I've installed the v1.9 beta and congratulations on what's clearly
weeks/months of effort.

I partially share John's concerns, however.

I do like the idea of having a workbench available but I'm not clear of
its position in the overall offering. I'd expect the windows explorer
extensions to be shortcuts to specific views within the workbench - is
that right? Since I've installed the Beta my Windows Exporer integration
has stopped working but I haven't drilled into the reasons why yet -
will let you know when I know.

The "editor" of the filter bar seems very comprehensive, but just a bit
of overkill. Might perhaps be worth making it available as an "Advanced
Filter". I'd guess 99% of filters would be handled fine with a keyword
search.

I find switching between the previous revision and the "Working copy
changes" views a bit of a jump. The filelist in the "commit" window is
formatted differently (filenames in blue and generally more squished
together). Also, the big box for comments above the file view itself
might be worth styling differently. For previous revisions, I think the
comment should be in with the "Changeset" dropdown - as its read-only.
In the "Working Copy Changes" view I think the comment box needs a
"Commit message" title so it's clear what the next step is. Perhaps also
make the "Commit" button more prominent.

Thanks for all your efforts.

Subject: [thg] Some thoughts on 1.9 beta

I have been playing with the v1.9 beta released a few days ago. As
always I'd like to thank everyone who donates their time to this great
project!

However, I am a little concerned about the current workbench layout (is
it finalised?). For me the strength in a GUI is simplicity, and for
version control I would hold TSVN up as a great example. Most windows
are simple, task orientated and easy to learn. That is not to say many
windows can't be folded together (I've always thought in Thg that
commit, status, shelve etc could be folded into a single window).

To me, the workbench currently seems cluttered and intimidating. There
are too many controls and performing simple tasks is sometimes unclear.
I'm concerned this may act as a barrier to entry for new users. After
all, our main selling point over Git is probably "more straight-forward,
easier to learn". While in v1.x it is possible to de-clutter the screens
easily enough using the options, the fundamental premise of v2 seems to
require more careful usability planning.

Just as a trivial example (I haven't spent a lot of time formulating how
to simplify the UI) - why make the filter bar visible the whole time?
Why is this even an option, surely we can all do CTRL-F when we need to
find something (or use a button) instead of cluttering up the screen?

I know aesthetics are very subjective, and maybe I'm 100% off here. I
would just be concerned that many big Hg/THg users won't even try the
new UI until it's released, and then it will be very frustrating to
unwind a lot of this.

Can I just clarify, how would the workbench typically be used? Is a
typical scenario that we leave it open all the time, going to the commit
pane when we need to commit etc? But basically replacing Windows
Explorer as an entry point?

Thanks again Steve and co, for all your hard work. This is all meant
very constructively!
