Hiya Steve, Paul and all in Virtual Maddieland,
Firstly, a big welcome to the list Steve. Hope you enjoy hanging out with
us geeks and anoraks;-)
> What's your most treasured piece of British Madness stuff, be it music or
>merchandise?
Right, for me this has to be the 7" picture disc of Michael Caine. For a
couple of reasons. Firstly, it's my favourite single of all time (by
anyone). Secondly, it was the most difficult piccy-disc to get my hands on
(with the exception of Waiting For The Ghost Train which I still don't
have). Back in 1984 I didn't even know it had been released on picture
disc. I went back to my local record shop every week to see if it had been
released on any formats other than the 7" and 12" but nothing came, so I
thought the picture disc didn't come out. It was only years later I heard
that there had been one, and I went mental. Over the years I always
searched for it at record fairs and second hand shops to no avail. Then one
fateful day two years ago (OK it was the day before Madstock IV), the
unbelievable happened. The Friday had been a particularly fruitful record
buying day in terms of non-Madness stuff, but there was a record fair in
teh Electric Ballroom the Saturday. It was amazing. I managed to pick up
the picture discs of One Better Day and Our House, which were missing from
my collection and a couple of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie 7" gatefolds dirt cheap
because they are/were unknown in England;-)
So I headed back to the Dublin Castle for the beering session quite happy
with myself, but still with no MC pic-disc. Then someone mentioned in the
pub mentioned that the esteemed Chris Carter-Pegg was wandering around with
a plastic bag full of Mad Goodies, one of which may well be said picture
disc!!! I think any of the Maddies that were there would tell you how my
face lit up when I heard that. I was giddy like a schoolgirl. So I had to
sit there downing pints watching for Chris arriving back. As soon as he
walked in I pounced. The man was a true gent. 8 changed hands and my life
was complete!
So that's the story of how I got my most treasured piece of UK Madness
memorabilia. It also helps that it is (IMHO) the loveliest of all the
picture discs, with pics from the video and a ghostly picture of MC
overlooking everything;-)
And for the record, my other most treasured Mad thing is my US 12" of Our
House which was purchased in Edinburgh Virgin Records in the summer of 1985
for 7.45 (the US album had cost me 8.30 in the same shop a year earlier).
A fantastic remix with the most amazing piece of piano playing I've ever
heard.
As for Paul!!!
>"...Why is water wet?..."
>
>Same reason as to why fire's hot, why ice is cold, why snow is white and why
>grass is green, etc, etc etc...
Come on now Paul. You know that is not true. Fire is hot because of the
energy emitted from the reaction with oxygen and the breaking up of the
chemical bonds! Snow is white because there is no absorption of light
energy to excite electrons and so all light is reflected! Grass is green
because the pigment molecules present (chlorophylls) absorb all wavelengths
of visible light radiation apart from green. And ice is cold because
someone put water in the freezer!;-) And none of these reasons explains
water being wet!
Sorry. Couldn't resist;-) And please don't quote me on that lot. I don't
know how correct it all is!
Cheers,
Peter
