Some very good points made by Scatty there.
I have to confess to being very tempted by this collection, there are
several tracks I would really love to hear (Perfect Place demo, vocal
cut of Mr Wheeze, the Work Rest & Play alternates etc.), but I don't
want to line the pockets of the bootlegger.
One argument that someone threw at me once when I was talking about
bootlegs was that if it's unreleased material, then the artist isn't
getting paid anyway. This is still wrong though, even if they are not
getting paid doesn't mean someone else who should make a healthy
profit.
Really the pitiful royalties that the band members get is another
matter, and I'm sure we all feel they deserve better than that (as do
many artists). What annoys me is Virgin records ignorance of this
material. I for one would have much prefered a handful of demos and
out-takes on the recentley re-vamped CDs than the PC videos (which
were already available on the Lot). How many people would rather watch
these on their PC instead of a video anyway? Get that DVD release out!
Maybe the band feel different and don't want these tracks released, I
don't know, but I suppose it's easy for us fans to get obsessive and
want to have every throw away, cast off track, that they ever
recorded - no matter how good or bad.
At the end of the day, I'm just frustrated that this material exists,
it is in the hands of someone who only sees a quick personal profit,
the band get nothing and the chances are I'll never hear the things I
really want to.
I feel quite depressed now!
All the best
Andy
