Thanks Jim.  That's what I suspected given the talk of performance
limitations.

I manage my rips over the network for convenience.  My server is in the
basement running Linux.  I perfer to use dbPowerAmp, a Windows app, to
rip.  I rip/encode to FLAC at the same time.  It saves me the step of
having to copy the file over when I'm done.  I was surprised that this
worked as well as it does when I first tried it.  The network isn't a
signifcant bottleneck.

I suspect this works well because dbPowerAmp rips to memory and encodes
from there.  So it's not a case where the data sent across the network,
read back over the network, encoded, and then written back over the
network.
