If I stand right in front of it, it detects me at around 50 cm distance. If I just reach for it with a hand it depends, it detects me always on the left side but not on the right side. I suspect this means that the sensor is on the left side of the display.
I'm skeptical if it's sensitive enough to detect gestures, but a screen saver doing something fun when you are getting close or should a clock temporary showing up would probably be possible.
