I'm out of ideas. Not sure what you mean when you say you "think" it was connected wirelessly when near the router. Couldn't you plug in headphones or something and stream internet radio just to confirm it was connected to internet?
sounds like the touch works, but is just not getting a wifi connection 30 feet away. I can say that the wifi is not great on these things. I had a SB3 that was 20 feet in a direct line from my wifi router with no wall and I had very spotty wifi (eventually solved with ethernet over CATV line adapter).
