Thanks. Yes I had read that it is a case of when and not if it goes bad.
I just wondered do I lessen wear and tear by turning it off? Also am I leaving it open to more chance of corruption by it being permanantly on? Also from a power saving point of view I cannot tell if my drive sleeps or not, there are no settings or anything elese that I can find. If given the above there really is no point switching it off the I don't mind leaving the HDD on connected to the sheevaplug that is on and simply disconnecting the network cable when I need to access the sheevaplug. Once I have the settings sorted I wouldn't be intending to change anything just leaving it to run SBS. On another note, I just read someones post about the dodgy power supplys on the sheevaplug which is a bit concerning.
