I finally found the problem. Many thanks for all the hints.
I try to describe it a bit more in detail, maybe it helps someone.

The solution was as mentioned above, formatting the HDD on windows.
I did it on a mac via bootcamp on windows XP. But that was not all.

I found out, that the disk utility of apple always creates a very
small additional partition on the HDD call GPT. This does not
show on the disk utility on a mac. It is only visible on the windows
formatting utility. To remove the GPT partition, it is necessary
to go to the command window and use the tool "diskpart" and
the drive needs to be reinitialized. So if you ever format a HDD
on a mac, it is not usable on the Squeezebox anymore without
this procedure as it seems. It took me 3 weeks, 3 ordered and
returned HDDs to find out.

The option to connect a USB drive to the SBT from my point of view
is still in the experimental phase, not ready for the end-consumer.
I hope a Logitech developer fixes this bug soon. The SBT should
access the correct partition automatically.

I will now start experimenting with Artwork. I read, that also might
take a few days or weeks to understand the right setup with the
picture sizes and locations.
